Conference Table Seating: What Size Fits 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 People

Allow 30 inches of table edge per person, then 42 to 48 inches of clear floor on every side. What size table each headcount needs, from 4 people at a 42 inch round to 12 at a 12 ft boardroom table, the room each one takes, and every conference and meeting table we build with its size, seats and room minimum.

Walnut 8 ft conference table on a black trestle base with six grey upholstered chairs, laptops and water bottles, in a corner meeting room with floor-to-ceiling city windows and a walnut credenza
Six seats set at an 8 ft table that takes 8 with a chair at each end: our Tenure 8 ft Conference Table with Trestle Base, 96 by 48 inches, made to order in the USA.

The short answer: allow 30 inches of table edge per person. A 6 ft (72 inch) table seats 6, an 8 ft (96 inch) table seats 8, a 10 ft (120 inch) table seats 8 to 10, and a 12 ft (144 inch) table seats 10 to 12. Four people fit at a 42 inch round or square table; a 48 inch round seats 4 to 5. Then leave 42 inches of clear floor beyond every edge of the table, 48 to be comfortable, so a 12 ft table wants a room 19 by 11 ft minimum, 20 by 12 ft comfortable; the side people walk along to reach their seats needs more.

How many people fit at a conference table?

Count 30 inches of table edge for each chair along each long side. That is the width a person needs for a laptop, a notebook and elbows, and it is also the width the ADA uses for a clear floor space at a table (section 305.3, 30 by 48 inches), so a seat planned at 30 inches is already the right width for a wheelchair position. Each end of a rectangle takes one chair on any top 36 inches deep or more; the end seat needs the table's depth, not its width. Two other spacings explain the ranges you will see on product pages: 36 inches per seat is generous, the elbow room a working session with papers wants, and 24 to 27 inches is board-style spacing for a room that meets without laptops. A range such as "8 to 10" is the same table at 36 and at 30 inches.

Worked example, 12 ft: 144 inches divided by 30 is 4.8, so 4 people sit along each side with room to spare, or 5 at 28.8 inches each, just under the standard. Add the two ends and you get 10 to 12. That is why product pages say a 12 ft table "seats 10 to 12": both are true, and the difference is whether everyone has a laptop open. The same arithmetic on a 10 ft (120 inch) top gives 4 a side plus the ends, 10, or 8 at a generous 36 inches each.

Conference table seating diagram: plan view of a 144 by 48 inch table with 28.8 inches per seat and 42 to 48 inches clear from the table edge, in a room of 19 to 20 by 11 to 12 feet
Twelve seats at a 12 ft table, the top of its 10 to 12 range, drawn to scale with the clear floor that has to surround it.

Depth matters less than length for headcount, but it decides comfort: 42 inches is a working meeting table, 48 inches leaves a center lane for power modules and papers, and 54 to 60 inches is boardroom scale. Our seated-height tables run 28-7/8 to 30 inches high, inside the 28 to 34 inch range the ADA sets for work surfaces (902.3); the one exception is the counter-height TeleMeet Media table.

What size conference table for 4 people?

Four people are happiest at a 42 inch round or square table, where everyone is within reach of the same document. That is the Tenure 42 in Round Meeting Table on a single pedestal, the same top on an X-base or a four-spoke Venice base, and the Tenure 42 in Square Meeting Table. Each needs a room 10.5 by 10.5 ft minimum, 11.5 by 11.5 ft comfortable. Step up to the Tenure 48 in Round Table for 4 to 5.

The Tenure 48 in Round Table: about 151 inches of edge, 4 to 5 seats.

What size conference table for 6 people?

By the 30 inch rule a 6 ft (72 inch) rectangle seats exactly 6: two down each side and one at each end, in a room 13 by 10 ft minimum, 14 by 11 ft comfortable. A 60 inch round seats 6 as well, with no head of the table, which suits a team that meets as equals; we make round tops to order up to 60 inches. Our smallest listed rectangle is 8 ft, and it seats 6 at a generous 48 inches of edge each, two a side and one at each end; if the room is tight we make the same tables to order at 72 and 84 inches, in the same 36, 42 and 48 inch depths, quoted on request. For a room that meets on video, the TeleMeet D-Shaped Video Conference Table is a 72 by 48 inch top whose flat side sits against a wall display and whose curve seats the room facing the screen.

Worth knowing: we do not list a 6 ft rectangular table; the two 72 inch tops we do list are the D-shaped video tables. The 72 and 84 inch rectangles are made to order, 2 to 3 weeks, and quoted on request rather than listed with a price.

What size conference table for 8 people?

An 8 ft (96 inch) table is the answer, and it is where our rectangular conference tables start. Three seats on each side and one at each end, 32 inches apiece, in a room 15 by 11 ft minimum, 16 by 12 ft comfortable. The Tenure 8 ft Conference Table with Trestle Base is 96 by 48 by 29 inches with a recessed power, USB and data module already in the top and a wire chase inside the black Y-leg base. The Tenure 8 ft Conference Table with Metal Legs is the same 96 by 48 top on a four-leg black base with one power and USB module, the table in the photo at the top of this page. For a working meeting room rather than a boardroom, the Tenure 8 ft Rectangular Meeting Table is 96 by 42 inches on two panel bases, and the 42 inch depth saves half a foot of room width.

Eight is also where an 8 ft table is genuinely full. If the team is 8 today and hiring, buy the 10 ft table now.

If you can't wait for a made-to-order build, the 8 ft size of our 12 Person Conference Table ships in 2-3 business days, with two flip-up power units in the top.

What size conference table for 10 people?

A 10 ft (120 inch) table seats 10 at 30 inches each, four down each side and one at each end, or 8 at a generous 36 inches, which is why its product page says 8 to 10. The room needs to be 17 by 11 ft minimum, 18 by 12 ft comfortable. Ours is the Tenure 10 ft Conference Table with Panel Base, 120 by 48 by 29 inches on a three-section panel base with wire management between the sections and a high-pressure laminate top, the tougher commercial-grade surface; the rest of the line is thermally-fused laminate. The top ships in two pieces at this length, joined at the center with alignment fasteners.

If you have exactly 10 people: the 10 ft table seats them at the standard 30 inches. If you want every seat to have 36 inches, papers spread out and a laptop, buy the 12 ft.

If you can't wait for a made-to-order build, the 10 ft size of our 12 Person Conference Table ships in 2-3 business days, with two flip-up power units in the top.

What size conference table for 12 people?

A 12 ft (144 inch) table seats 10 to 12 and wants a room 19 by 11 ft minimum, 20 by 12 ft comfortable. It is the size with the most choice in our line, and all five 12 ft tops ship in two pieces joined at the center. The Tenure 12 ft Tapered Conference Table narrows from 60 inches deep at the head to 36 at the tail, so everyone along the sides can see the head seat without leaning; the two seats nearest the narrow end give up some table depth for that, and the 60 inch head needs a room 12 ft wide rather than 11. The Tenure 12 ft Conference Table with Power is a straight 144 by 48 with two recessed outlet and USB modules plus network, HDMI and VGA plates in the top, for rooms that run hybrid meetings all day. The Tenure 12 ft Minimal Conference Table with A-Frame Base is the same 144 by 48 on a clean metal A-frame with two power and USB modules and a cable spine. The Tenure 12 ft Conference Table with Credenza is a 144 by 54 inch bow-end top with a matching buffet credenza and a wall presentation board, a complete room in one order; plan the credenza against one wall and take its depth off the clearance on that side.

Can't wait for a build? The 12 Person Conference Table is the one conference table we sell ready to ship: 144 by 48 inches in a California Walnut finish, with two flip-up power units in the top. It ships in 2-3 business days, mostly assembled, and comes in 8 and 10 ft too. See price

For 14 to 20 people the same rule gives 16 ft (192 inch) and 20 ft (240 inch) tables; the room sizes and the seat reconciliation for those lengths are in our guide to standard conference table height and dimensions.

What size round conference table for 4, 6 or 8 people?

Round tables work on the circumference, at the same 30 inches per person: a 42 inch round has about 132 inches of edge, so 4 people; a 48 inch round has about 151 inches, so 4 with elbow room and 5 at 30 inches each; a 60 inch round has about 188 inches and seats 6. Eight around a round table needs about 77 inches across, a table nobody can reach the middle of, which is why past six people the answer is a rectangle. Our rounds are the 42 inch Tenure 42 in Round Meeting Table and its X-base and Venice-base versions, and the Tenure 48 in Round Table; round tops to 60 inches are made to order. A 42 inch round needs a room 10.5 by 10.5 ft minimum, 11.5 by 11.5 ft comfortable, a 48 inch round 11 by 11 ft minimum, 12 by 12 ft comfortable, and a 60 inch round 12 by 12 ft minimum, 13 by 13 ft comfortable.

How big does the room need to be?

Start with the room, then pick the table. Two clearances, and they are different. The seating clearance is 42 inches of clear floor beyond every edge of the table, measured from the table edge, 48 to be comfortable: that is the chair, the space to roll it back, and room for one person to squeeze past. It adds 7 to 8 feet to the table's length and to its width, and it is what the room figures on this page are built from, with the chairs backing onto walls. The walkway clearance is for the side people use to reach their seats, or any accessible route: keep 36 inches clear behind the pulled-out chairs, which is the minimum clear width the ADA sets for an accessible route (section 403.5.1). We plan a pulled-out chair at 30 to 36 inches from the table edge, so a walkway side needs about 66 to 72 inches from the table edge, roughly 2 feet more than the seating clearance on that side. If a wheelchair user needs a place at the table, the 30 by 48 inch clear floor space has to sit in front of a seat with knee and toe space under the top (sections 305.3 and 306). How much space there is under our tops depends on the base and on any wire trough or cable spine beneath the top, so check the dimension diagram on the product page, or tell us which seat it is and we will confirm the clearance before you order.

Conference table size by number of people diagram: 42 inch round for 4, 48 inch round for 4 to 5, 6 ft for 6, 8 ft for 8, 10 ft for 8 to 10 and 12 ft for 10 to 12, with minimum room sizes from 11 to 12 by 11 to 12 feet up to 19 to 20 by 11 to 12 feet
Six table sizes to the same scale, from a 42 inch round to a 12 ft rectangle, with the minimum room each one needs.

Tape the footprint on the floor before ordering, table plus clearance, and walk it. It is the cheapest check there is, and it catches the 12 ft table in a 16 ft room every time. If the room is too small for the headcount, a tapered or a 42 inch deep top buys back width, and a 6 or 7 ft custom length buys back length.

Every conference and meeting table we list, measured

All 21 tables we list, 15 conference tables and 6 meeting tables, sorted smallest to largest. Length by depth is the top; seats are the figure on each product page (three exceptions in the note under the table); the room column applies the seating clearance above to that table's own length and depth (add about 2 feet on a walkway side). Seated heights run 28-7/8 to 30 inches; the TeleMeet Media table is counter height. All are made in the USA; all but the 12 Person Conference Table are made to order. Each name opens the product page, where the current price, the renders and the dimension diagram live.

The 16 and 20 ft seat figures assume board-style spacing of 24 to 27 inches; at 30 inches each they seat 14 and 18. The ping pong table's figure is by the 30 inch rule; the two D-shaped tables seat along the curve and are sized around a wall display rather than a headcount. Every top 10 ft and longer ships in two pieces (three at 20 ft), and the grain will not line up perfectly at the seams. Custom lengths from 72 to 240 inches and depths from 36 to 60 inches are made to order; ask for a quote.

Conference table size, questions answered

What size conference table seats 6?

A 6 ft (72 inch) rectangle, two on each side and one at each end, or a 60 inch round. An 8 ft table also seats 6 with generous elbow room. We build 72 and 84 inch lengths to order.

How long is a conference table for 8 people?

8 ft (96 inches), 42 to 48 inches deep, in a room 15 by 11 ft minimum, 16 by 12 ft comfortable. Four of our tables are that size, and the 108 inch ping pong table seats 8 as well.

Is a 10 ft or a 12 ft conference table right for 10 people?

The 10 ft seats 10 at the standard 30 inches each. If you want 36 inches a seat, the 12 ft is the better buy.

How long is a conference table for 10 people?

10 ft (120 inches) by 48 inches deep. It seats 10 at 30 inches each and 8 at 36, in a room 17 by 11 ft minimum, 18 by 12 ft comfortable.

How many people fit at a 12 foot conference table?

10 to 12. Four per side with room to spare or five at 28.8 inches each, plus one at each end. The room should be 19 by 11 ft minimum, 20 by 12 ft comfortable.

What size round conference table seats 4?

42 inches. A 48 inch round seats 4 to 5, and a 60 inch round seats 6. Eight needs about 77 inches across, where a rectangle uses the room better.

How much space do you need around a conference table?

42 inches of clear floor beyond every table edge as a minimum, 48 to be comfortable, so the room is the table length plus 7 to 8 feet by the table depth plus 7 to 8 feet. On the side people walk along to reach their seats, keep 36 inches clear behind the pulled-out chairs, about 66 to 72 inches from the table edge.

What is the standard conference table height?

About 29 to 30 inches. Our seated-height tables run 28-7/8 to 30 inches, inside the 28 to 34 inch range the ADA allows for a work surface. The TeleMeet Media table is the one built at counter height.

Can you make a conference table in a custom size?

Yes. Rectangular, racetrack, boat-shaped, bow-end and tapered tops from 72 to 240 inches long and 36 to 60 inches deep, round tops from 36 to 60 inches and square tops from 36 to 54 inches, made to order in 2 to 3 weeks. Send the room size and the headcount and we quote the fit.

Want us to size it for you?

Send the room dimensions and a photo or plan. We reply with the table that fits, how many it seats, and a quote.
