What Size L-Shaped Desk Do You Need? 64, 74 and 84 Inch Executive Desks Compared
OfficeSimpli's L-Shaped Executive Desk comes in 64 x 63, 74 x 63 and 84 x 72 inches. Measure both walls out from the corner and pick the largest size that leaves chair room. In a corner, the 84 needs a 10 ft wall.
The short answer: in a corner, OfficeSimpli's 64 x 63 L-desk needs about 100 x 72 inches of floor (8 ft 4 inches by 6 ft), the 74 x 63 about 110 x 72 and the 84 x 72 about 120 x 78 (10 ft by 6 ft 6 inches). That counts 42 inches of chair room from the main top's edge where you sit, and a 36 inch walkway past the desk's open end, to the door. The 84 x 72 just fits a 10 x 10 ft room, with no inches to spare, so trim and baseboards can make it tight: 10 x 10 ft is the bare minimum. The layout: the main top's guest side (where a visitor would sit) against one wall, the return (the short side of the L) against the other, and you inside the L. Facing the room with guest chairs in front takes 42 to 48 more inches of depth.
Which L-desk size is which?
Three sizes, each with the return, the short side of the L, on the left or the right. The size name is the whole L, seen from above.
How do you read an L-desk size?
Each size has two numbers. Take the 84 x 72. The 84 is the width of the main top, the long surface in front of you. The 72 runs from the back of the main top to the end of the return.
The return runs the whole side of the L, and one end of the return tucks under the main top. So the second number is the return's own length. That is why the 84 x 72 takes 72 inches along the return's wall, not 108.
The main top is 30 inches deep on the 64 x 63 and 74 x 63, and 36 inches deep on the 84 x 72. The return is 19 inches deep on the two smaller sizes and 24 on the 84 x 72, so its top is 5 inches wider there. On all three, the main top is about 30 inches tall, and the return is a lower storage unit tucked under one end.
How much floor does each size need?
Picture the desk in a corner. The main top's guest side, with the full panel a visitor faces, goes against one wall. The back of the return goes against the other wall. You sit inside the L.
Then add two clearances. Chair room: 42 inches, measured from the edge of the main top where you sit, so you can roll back and stand up. That is our own planning figure, the same one our executive desk guide uses.
Walkway: 36 inches of clear floor past the desk's open end, to the door. The federal accessibility rules (ADA) say “the clear width of walking surfaces shall be 36 inches (915 mm) minimum” for a walking path (section 403.5.1).
So the wall behind the main top decides the size, and it is the whole choice between the 74 and the 84. A 9 x 9 ft room fits the 64 x 63 with 8 inches to spare, but the 74 x 63 is 2 inches short. A 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 ft room fits the 74 x 63, but the 84 x 72 needs 6 more inches. A 10 x 10 ft room fits all three.
Want guests across the desk? Turn it to face the room, with your back to the wall. Leave 42 inches of chair room behind you, then the main top, then 42 to 48 inches in front for guest chairs, our planning figure from our conference table size guide (“leave at least 3.5 to 4 feet of clearance on every side for chairs and walking room”). Keep the 36 inch walkway past the open end, to the door. The table's guest column shows the floor each size needs this way.

How do you measure your room for an L-desk?
What size L-shaped desk do you need? Mostly, the wall behind the main top decides, so measure before you shop.
- Measure each wall's full length from the corner. Run the tape along the floor, corner to corner, and compare with the table. Our built-in vs freestanding guide starts the same way.
- Put the desk in the corner away from the door, with the main top on the longer wall. The 36 inch walkway in our numbers is your path from the door to the desk's open end, so check that the door opens without hitting the desk or your chair.
- Check the window. A window is not in the way if its sill is higher than the main top, about 30 inches.
- Pick the return side. A left return sits on your left as you sit at the main surface; a right return sits on your right. Our guide to the best L-shaped executive desks explains how to choose it (see "Left return or right return").
- Find the outlets. Check that your cords reach an outlet without crossing the walkway.
- Tape it out. Mark the desk and the 42 inches of chair room where you sit with painter's tape. Then walk in from the door.
Example: a 10 x 11 ft room with the door in one corner. Put the desk in the opposite corner, with the main top on the 11 ft wall. Both the 74 x 63 and the 84 x 72 fit. The 74 leaves 22 inches to spare on that wall and 48 on the 10 ft wall; the 84 leaves 12 and 42.
Worth knowing: the return is a lower storage unit, not a second desk at the main top's height. You work at the main top; the return holds the drawers, with a lower top for a printer or papers.
L-desk sizes, questions answered
What are the dimensions of an 84 inch L-shaped desk?
Ours is 84 x 72 inches overall: an 84 x 36 inch main top and a 72 x 24 inch return. One end of the return tucks under the main top.
Is an 84 inch desk too big for a home office?
Not if one wall is at least 10 ft long. In a corner, with the guest side against the wall, OfficeSimpli's 84 inch executive desk needs about 120 x 78 inches of floor, chair room and walkway included. The 84 x 72 just fits a 10 x 10 ft room, with no inches to spare, so trim and baseboards can make it tight: 10 x 10 ft is the bare minimum. Facing the room with guest chairs in front, it needs about 120 x 120 to 126 inches.
Which L-shaped desk sizes have a 30 inch deep top?
The 64 x 63 and the 74 x 63. The 84 x 72 has a 36 inch deep main top. The return is 19 inches deep on the two smaller sizes and 24 on the 84.
How tall is the desk?
The main top is about 30 inches tall on all three sizes, a standard seated height. The return is a lower storage unit, with one end tucked under the main top.
How does the desk arrive?
It ships by freight, with every piece wrapped and protected. Depending on the size, it comes in four or five large sections that are already put together, and you join them into the L. Delivery is free to the curb or a loading dock in the continental US, and inside delivery is a paid add-on.
