Can a Countertop Sit Right on Top of Your Washer and Dryer? Vibration, Weight and Getting Behind It

Yes, if it is made to rest there, like the OfficeSimpli Washer Dryer Countertop. But LG's and Samsung's manuals caution against placing objects on top, so check both of yours first. Here is what to do either way.

OfficeSimpli gray woodgrain countertop resting on top of a side-by-side washer and dryer, raised rails on the back and sides
A customer's countertop resting on a side-by-side front-load pair, with raised rails on the back and both sides: the OfficeSimpli Washer Dryer Countertop in a gray woodgrain.

The short answer: a countertop made for it can sit right on top of side-by-side front-loaders with flat tops. OfficeSimpli's countertop sits on rubber pads, has raised rails on the back and both sides, and lifts off for the hoses. Check both machines' manuals first. If your manual says not to place objects on top (LG's and Samsung's do), a countertop that rests on the machines goes against that caution, and a top supported on the wall is the way to follow it (see our DIY countertop guide). If yours does not mention it (the Whirlpool and GE guides we read do not), a countertop made to rest there is the simpler choice.

Will a countertop that rests on the machines work for your setup? (fit answers from our product page; manual rows from the makers' manuals)
Your washer and dryer Will a resting top work? What to do
Side by side, front-loading, flat tops Yes: it is made for this. The Standard is 54 inches wide; the Large and Extra Large are 58. Measure across both machines, edge to edge, then pick a size in our sizing guide.
Side by side, but at different heights Yes, once they sit level Level both machines with their adjustable feet.
Your manual says not to put objects on top (LG's and Samsung's do) It fits, but it goes against that caution A top supported on the wall is the way to follow it: see our DIY guide.
Your manuals do not mention it (the Whirlpool and GE guides we read do not) Yes A countertop made to rest there is the simpler choice.
Stacked, dryer on the washer No Skip a resting top. A folding counter nearby needs its own support, such as a top fixed to the wall: see our DIY guide.
Top-loading washer No: the countertop would block the lid It needs a top that clears the lid, such as a hinged top supported on the wall (see removable or hinged below).
Machines with curved tops No A flat board cannot sit flat on a curve. A top supported on the wall, above the machines, never touches them.

The fit answers are from our product page at time of posting; the manual rows are from the manuals in the next section. Sizes for each washer and dryer pair are in our sizing guide.

What do washer manuals say about putting things on top?

We read the manuals for four washers and three dryers from four makers, LG, Samsung, Whirlpool and GE, each saved from the maker's own website. LG's and Samsung's manuals both caution against placing objects on top. The Whirlpool and GE guides we read do not mention items on top. Here is what each one says, word for word.

LG

Washer WM4000H*A (owner's manual MFL71964303), page 6: “Do not place objects on top of the appliance.” Page 21: “Do not place or store laundry products, such as detergent, bleach, or liquid fabric softener, on top of your washer. These products can damage the washer's finish and controls.”

Dryers DL*X400 and DL*X408 (owner's manual MFL70442676), page 6: “Do not store plastic, paper, or clothing that may burn or melt on top of the dryer during operation.” Page 15 asks for space between appliances (see the vibration question below).

Read the washer manual or the dryer manual (PDF).

Samsung

Washer WF45B6300A* (user manual DC68-04355A-04), page 10: “Do not stand on the appliance or place objects (such as laundry, lighted candles, lighted cigarettes, dishes, chemicals, metal objects, etc.) on the appliance.” Page 36: “Do not place anything on top of your washer while it is running.”

Dryer DVE(G)45B6300* (user manual DC68-04299K-00), page 52: “Do not place any heavy or sharp objects or a detergent container on the dryer. They can scratch or damage the top cover of the dryer.” For an alcove or closet, page 16 gives a “Minimum clearance for stable operation” of 1 inch at the top and the sides.

Read the washer manual or the dryer manual (PDF).

Whirlpool

Front-loading automatic washer: the use and care guide W11339718B and the installation instructions W11156977B do not mention items on top. Installation, page 3: “Add spacing of 1" (25 mm) on all sides of washer to reduce noise transfer.” It does not say whether “all sides” includes the top.

Read the use and care guide or the installation instructions (PDF).

GE

Front-load washers (owner's manual 49-3000368), page 3: “DO NOT climb or stand on this unit.” Page 32: “Washer is designed to move 1/4" to reduce forces transmitted to the floor. This movement is normal.”

Dryers PFD95, PFD87, GFD65, GFD55 and GFV55 (owner's manual 49-3000386), page 2: “DO NOT climb or stand on this unit.” Neither manual mentions items on top. The dryer file on GE's site holds the owner's pages, not the installation pages.

Why? LG lists its line under a general caution: “To reduce the risk of minor or moderate injury to persons, malfunction, or damage to the product or property when using this product, follow basic precautions, including the following” (page 6). The one specific reason it gives is for laundry products: they “can damage the washer's finish and controls” (page 21). Samsung's dryer manual gives its reason too: heavy or sharp objects “can scratch or damage the top cover of the dryer” (page 52).

What this countertop has

Pads on every corner

They grip the machine tops, so the board does not sit on bare metal. 7 reviewers on our product page wished the pads were bigger or that there were more of them.

Rails on three sides

They stop socks and dryer sheets from falling behind or beside the machines. The front stays open for folding.

Nothing bolted down

It lifts off to reach the hoses, then sets back in place.

A laminate top

Our product page says it handles the heat from a running dryer without warping or lifting. One reviewer, listed as Laundry (April 2024), wrote: “edges open up if heat (dryer) nearby”.

Nothing sharp

The underside is smooth, with nothing sharp on it.

Worth knowing: if your manual says not to place objects on top (LG's and Samsung's do), a countertop that rests on the machines goes against that caution, and a top supported on the wall is the way to follow it. Our DIY guide shows how to build one. If yours does not mention it (the Whirlpool and GE guides we read do not), a countertop made to rest there is the simpler choice.

Will it slide or shake when the washer spins?

A front-load washer moves when it spins. GE's washer manual says the washer is designed to move 1/4 inch, and that this movement is normal (page 32).

The washer and the dryer do not move the same way. When one moves more than the other, a board that rests on both can shift a little. Jessica (June 2025) wrote: “It moves slightly when washer and dryer are on but not to the extend of it being a burden.”

The countertop has rubber pads on every corner that grip the machine tops. It also has raised rails on the back and both sides, so things do not slide off into the gap behind the machines.

How it sits: pads under the board, rails at the back and sides, an open front, and space behind the machines for the hoses.

Level machines shake less, too. LG's washer manual warns, on page 14: “Using the washer without leveling it may cause excess vibration and noise, leading to a washer malfunction.” Level both machines with their adjustable feet, as our product page suggests.

What do owners say? Of the 78 written reviews on our product page at time of posting, 26 say how the top acts while the machines run. 19 of those 26 say it stays put. 2 say it moved or felt unstable. Elizabeth (July 2024) wrote that “it is a little unstable”. 5 owners added their own grip, such as extra rubber pieces, hook-and-loop tape or non-skid furniture coasters.

Separately, 7 reviewers wished the pads were bigger or that there were more of them. 3 of those 7 also say it stays put.

It stays put

Does a top on both machines pass vibration from one to the other?

It can: the countertop rests on both machines through rubber pads, so it touches both. That goes against LG's dryer manual, which says on page 15: “There should be at least a little space around the dryer (or any other appliance) to eliminate the transfer of vibration from one appliance to another.” It also goes against Samsung's washer manual, which lists this fix for noise and vibration on page 51: “Make sure the washer is not contacting any other object.” And for an alcove or closet, Samsung's dryer manual asks for 1 inch of space above the dryer (page 16).

In the reviews on our product page, Dan (January 2025) wrote: “We have heard no additional rattles or squeaks since adding the top.” Jessica's review above says it can still move a little. If your pair starts to knock or rattle with the top on, lift it off and listen: that tells you whether the top is the cause.

How heavy is it?

About 43, 47 or 50 pounds, for the Standard, Large and Extra Large sizes.

Is that too much for the machines? No maker we read gives a weight limit for the top. LG's and Samsung's manuals both caution against placing objects on top, whatever they weigh, and Samsung's dryer manual names heavy objects in particular (page 52).

On the other side, owners say the weight helps it stay put, as in the review below. It also makes the countertop harder to lift, so plan on two people (next section).

This one is heavy and takes a minute to get it situated, but that extra weight is great for keeping it in place.”

How do you get behind it to reach the hoses?

Lift it off. That is the point of a removable countertop over a washer and dryer. Nothing is bolted down, so the whole countertop lifts off to reach the hoses and connections behind the machines. Then it sets back in place.

It is heavy, so plan on two people. Bargain (March 2026) liked that “it just lays on top of the appliances and isn't permanently attached.”

Because it is not fastened down, do not sit, stand or climb on it, and keep kids from pulling on it. GE's manuals say the same about the machines themselves: “DO NOT climb or stand on this unit.”

New washer and dryer? Take the countertop off and set it on the new pair, as long as they are side-by-side front-loaders with flat tops.

Two people needed to lift it because it is heavy.”

Have side-by-side front-loaders with flat tops?

Check both machines' manuals first. If neither mentions items on top, the OfficeSimpli Washer Dryer Countertop rests on the pair, keeps socks from falling behind and comes off when you need the hoses. Our sizing guide matches it to your machines.

Removable or hinged: which top does your washer need?

It depends on how your washer opens. A front-load washer opens at the front, so a removable countertop for a washer and dryer can rest on both machines. You take it off only now and then. That is our countertop: removable, not hinged.

A top-loading washer opens at the top, so a countertop resting on it would block the lid, and ours does not fit top-loaders. For a top-loader, look at a hinged countertop over a washer and dryer: it is fixed at the back and lifts like a lid. It has to clear the washer's lid when that lid is open, and it needs support from the wall, not the machines. Our DIY guide shows how to fasten strips to the wall to hold a top.

Two customers' countertops resting on side-by-side front-load pairs: nothing is hinged or bolted down, and the machines open at the front.

A removable top fits

  • Side-by-side front-loaders with flat tops
  • Machines at the same height, or leveled with their adjustable feet
  • Manuals that do not mention items on top (the Whirlpool and GE guides we read do not)
  • You want to take it off for the hoses or a new pair
  • You want rails that stop socks falling behind

Look elsewhere if

  • A top-loading washer: you need a top that clears the lid
  • Stacked machines, or machines with curved tops
  • Your manual says not to place objects on top (LG's and Samsung's do): a top supported on the wall is the way to follow it. See our DIY guide
  • You want one counter that runs from wall to wall

Countertops on top of a washer and dryer, questions answered

Can I put a countertop on top of a washer and dryer?

A countertop made to rest there fits side-by-side front-loaders with flat tops. If your manual says not to place objects on top (LG's and Samsung's do), a countertop that rests on the machines goes against that caution, and a top supported on the wall is the way to follow it. If yours does not mention it (the Whirlpool and GE guides we read do not), a countertop made to rest there is the simpler choice.

How do I support a countertop over a washer and dryer?

Two ways. A ready-made top like ours rests on the machines on rubber pads. A built-in top rests on strips fastened to the wall, so it never touches the machines. That is the way to follow a manual that says not to place objects on top. Our DIY guide shows how to build one.

Is there a hinged countertop for a washer and dryer?

A top that lifts like a lid is what a top-loading washer needs, because its lid has to open. We do not sell one. Ours is removable, made for side-by-side front-loaders, and it does not fit top-loaders.

Are washer dryer countertops worth it?

Owners on our product page mostly say yes, for a side-by-side front-load pair whose manuals do not mention items on top. They get a flat place to fold, and nothing falls behind the machines. At time of posting ours is rated 4.77 out of 5 on 258 reviews there. If your manual says not to place objects on top, a top supported on the wall is the way to follow it.

What can I put on top of my washer and dryer?

Go by your manuals. LG's and Samsung's manuals both caution against placing objects on top. LG's washer manual adds that laundry products such as detergent, bleach and fabric softener “can damage the washer's finish and controls” (page 21). Samsung's dryer manual names heavy or sharp objects and detergent containers (page 52). Shelves on the wall, or a top supported on the wall, keep things off the machines.

Will a countertop scratch my washer and dryer?

Ours sits on pads on every corner, between the board and the machines, and its underside is smooth with nothing sharp on it. Samsung's dryer manual warns that heavy or sharp objects “can scratch or damage the top cover of the dryer” (page 52), so check your manual.

A countertop that comes off when you need it
