What Size Washer Dryer Countertop Do You Need? Fit by Washer and Dryer Model (2026)

The short answer: measure across both machines, outside edge to outside edge, with them pushed together the way they will sit. Most front-load washers and dryers from LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag and Electrolux are 27 inches wide, so the pair is 54 inches and the Standard 54 x 27.5 fits. GE and GE Profile front-loaders are 28 inches wide, so a GE pair is 56 inches and needs the 58 inch wide Extra Large 58 x 30, which reaches 1 inch past each machine. Compacts sold as 24 inch (Bosch, 23 1/2 inches wide) make a 47 inch pair, which is not a clean fit for a ready-made board. The table below gives the numbers for 16 pairs, every one read from the manufacturer's own spec sheet.

How do you measure a washer and dryer for a countertop?

Three numbers, and a tape measure does all three in two minutes.

1. Width. Push the machines together the way they will sit. Measure along the top, from the outside edge of the washer to the outside edge of the dryer. If you keep a gap between them for a bin or a step stool, measure with the gap.
2. Depth. Measure along the flat top of the machine: from the wall side to where the control panel or the door starts, with the door closed. The countertop sits from the wall side forward, so it needs to be a little shallower than the flat top, not deeper. The depth a manufacturer prints is the whole machine, door and panel included, so it runs bigger than the flat top; the table below uses the printed figure because that is what the spec sheets publish.
3. Height. Measure from the top of the taller machine up to whatever is above it: cabinets, a shelf, a window sill. The countertop needs 3.5 inches of that space for its rail, the raised edge that runs along the back and both sides of the board and stands 3.5 inches above the machine tops with the board included. It is there so socks, dryer sheets and bottles stop at the edge instead of falling into the gap behind the machines. Leave room above the rail for your hands.

Which countertop size fits which washer and dryer?

The table covers 16 front-load pairs from 8 brands, with GE Profile listed under its own name: the washer and the electric dryer the manufacturer sells as its match. Every width, depth and height is the manufacturer's own figure, door closed, read from its spec sheet or planning-dimension drawing (linked in the sources). Pair width is the two widths added with no gap. Depth is the deeper of the two cabinets. Height is the taller machine on its own feet, before any pedestal.

Three things stand out. First, 10 of the 16 pairs are exactly 54 inches across, because 27 inches is the standard front-load width, and Speed Queen's 53 3/4 inch pair takes the same board with 1/8 inch to spare on each side. Second, GE is the exception: every GE and GE Profile front-loader here is 28 inches wide, so the pair is 56 inches and a 54 inch board would leave 1 inch of machine showing on each side. The 58 inch board reaches 1 inch past each machine instead; the board rests on its rubber pads on the machine tops, not on its edges, so that inch changes the look and nothing else. One caution: at time of posting GE's own pages list all 6 GE and GE Profile models in this table as no longer being manufactured, on clearance. They are here because people own them and search by model; if you are buying a new GE pair, take the width and depth from the spec page of the model you are buying, and expect the same 28 inch width. Third, depth varies far more than width, from 30 1/4 to 34 1/2 inches across the 54 inch pairs; the board never has to match it, it only has to stay shallower than the flat top.

Does the countertop need to be as deep as the machines?

No, and it should not be. The manufacturers' depth figures, 25 to 34 1/2 inches on the pairs in the table, are the whole machine with the door closed: the cabinet plus the door and the control panel on the front. The flat top you set the board on is shallower than that, and the manufacturers do not print it. The board sits from the wall side forward and its front edge lands at or just behind the control panel, as in the photo at the top of this page; the buttons stay clear and nothing hangs over the door. The Standard and the Large are 27.5 inches deep and the Extra Large is 30. Measure your flat top: if it is shorter than the board you are choosing, the board would overhang the panel, so ask us first.

Worth knowing: the Bosch compacts, sold as 24 inch and 23 1/2 inches wide, are the one case where the board is deeper than the machines (25 to 26 inches for the deeper unit of each pair). A ready-made 54 inch board would also overhang a 47 inch Bosch pair by 3 1/2 inches on each side. That is a job for a custom width; ask us before you buy.

Will it clear the cabinets above the machines?

The countertop needs 3.5 inches between the machine tops and the cabinets, plus room above the rail for your hands. If you are planning a laundry room rather than measuring one, the machines in the table stand 33 1/4 to 40 7/16 inches tall on their own feet, so with the 3.5 inch rail the top of the rail lands between 36 3/4 and 43 15/16 inches off the floor. Speed Queen is the tall one at 40 7/16 inches; Bosch compacts are the short ones at 33 1/4. In a finished room, only the gap above the machines matters: measure it.

Most front-loaders have adjustable feet, and several makers print a height range for that reason: Maytag lists the MHW5630HW at 38 5/8 to 40 inches on its feet, and Whirlpool the WFW9620HC at 38 5/8 to 40. The table uses the lowest setting; with the feet fully extended those two stand 1 3/8 inches taller, so plan for the higher figure if your machines are shimmed up. If your washer and dryer sit at different heights, level them with the feet, or shim the low side with a folded towel; the board sits flat either way.

Do pedestals, a gap, stacking or a top-loader change the size?

• Pedestals change the height only. A storage pedestal raises the machine by its own height, which its listing prints. Width and depth do not change, so the countertop size does not change; only the clearance to the cabinets does.
• A gap between the machines adds to the width. A 27 inch pair with a 2 inch gap measures 56 inches, and the 54 inch board would sit 1 inch short on each side; measure with the gap you will keep. Many owners like a small gap under a wider board, because a lint bin or an ironing board fits between the machines.
• Stacking kits and top-loaders rule the countertop out. With the dryer on top of the washer there is no pair to span, and a top-load washer's lid opens upward into the board. That is why every size is for side-by-side front-load pairs only.
