Farmhouse Laundry Room Ideas, Starting at the Machines

Six farmhouse and rustic laundry room ideas that start with a wood-look counter across the washer and dryer, then the walls, shelves, sink, light and decor around it, plus which finish suits which room.

The short answer: The best farmhouse laundry room ideas pair warm wood with white and a little texture: shiplap or board-and-batten on the walls, open wood shelves, a plant, and a wood top across the machines. That top can be a wood look. OfficeSimpli sells one for side-by-side front-load pairs: a woodgrain laminate on an engineered-wood board, in walnut-look, oak-look, gray woodgrain and white finishes. Match the finish to the wood already in the room. It cannot be stained or distressed, and water should not be left sitting on it, so keep a farmhouse sink's splash away from it.

Farmhouse and rustic laundry room ideas, from the machines out

A farmhouse laundry room leans white and light wood, with texture on the walls. Rustic rooms often lean darker: stained wood, stone and iron, like the cabinets and tile floor at the top of this page. The six ideas below work for both, and the finish guide after them says which wood look suits which room.

Lay one wood-look counter across the machines

A staged render from our product page, not a real room: a walnut-look Washer Dryer Countertop on two silver front-loaders, under dark wood wall shelves, with a wicker hamper and a wood ladder shelf on either side.

Fixes: two bare machine topsSets up with a screwdriver

Many farmhouse lists put a wood counter over the washer and dryer. Our Washer Dryer Countertop brings that warm wood tone to the machine tops without any building. Want real butcher block instead? Our build-it-yourself guide covers that job.

It is an engineered-wood board with a woodgrain laminate top: a hard surface fused on with heat, under a clear protective coat. It rests on rubber pads on top of a side-by-side front-load pair, with no bolts, brackets or wall mounting. Its back and side edges stand up like a low wall, so socks and dryer sheets stay on top instead of falling behind the pair, while the front is left open for folding.

Try this: before you choose a finish, picture the room from where you usually walk in. The counter will be the biggest wood surface in view, so let it set the tone for the shelves and decor you add later.

I wanted something to protect the tops of my new washer and dryer, which it does, but it also has improved the overall look of the room as it looks like a real cabinet top.”

Give the walls farmhouse texture

White subway tile on one wall and white board-and-batten on the other, around a dark brown woodgrain Washer Dryer Countertop on a white front-load pair (product page photo).

Fixes: flat, plain wallsThe counter lifts off for wall work

Texture on the walls does a lot of the farmhouse work. Shiplap, long boards hung level with a thin gap between them, is the classic. Board-and-batten, flat panels with narrow strips over the seams, and white subway tile give the same feel, as in this corner. The dark top in this photo gives the white walls contrast; a light oak-look top would keep the same room airy.

Because nothing bolts the counter to the wall or the machines, it lifts off in seconds when you paint or panel behind the pair, then goes right back on.

Try this: do the wall before the counter goes on. If it is already in place, lift it off and lean it somewhere safe while you work.

Repeat the wood tone on the wall above

Fixes: wood in only one spotMeasure the gap first

One wood surface can look like an accident; two or three look planned. Open wood shelves or a wood cabinet above the machines, in a tone close to the counter's, tie the room together, and dark iron brackets lean the look rustic. Shelves and cabinets are a separate buy from another store.

Hang the lowest one high enough. The counter's rail, the raised edge on its back and sides, rises 3.5 inches above the machine tops with the board included, so the bottom of a shelf needs to sit more than 3.5 inches above the machines, with room left over for your hands. The measuring steps are in our sizing guide.

Try this: tape the shelf line on the wall, then slide a stack of folded towels under it to see whether the space works before you drill.

Give a farmhouse sink its own spot

Fixes: splashes on the counterA new sink is a plumbing job

A deep farmhouse sink, the kind with an exposed front panel, suits these rooms, but plan where its water lands. The product page calls the top water-resistant for detergent splashes and spills, so a splash is fine if you wipe it up. Just do not leave water sitting on it for a long time, and a sink right beside the counter splashes every time it runs.

So set the sink a step away from the machines if the plumbing allows, or at least where the faucet's spray cannot reach the counter's edge. Wipe up splashes rather than letting them sit, and let dripping clothes drain in the sink or a basket, not on the counter.

Try this: run the faucet at full flow once and watch where the splashes land before you settle on the sink's spot.

Warm the room with iron, baskets and a deeper wall color

Fixes: a room that feels coldWorks with any top

Light sets the mood first. A cage pendant, a bulb inside an open metal frame, or a seeded-glass shade, clear glass with tiny bubbles in it, gives a laundry room a warm, old-house glow that a bare ceiling fixture does not.

Iron hooks or a peg rail, a wood strip with a row of pegs, hold bags and hangers by the door. Woven baskets on the floor soften the hard lines of the machines. For a cozy rustic room, try a darker, warmer wall color instead of bright white; stained wood tends to look richer against it.

Try this: change one thing at a time, starting with the light, and live with it for a few loads before you add the next.

Dress the top with one plant and one old piece

Fixes: a top that looks bareRaised back and sides

A plant and one old piece, such as a vintage scale, a tin or a wire basket, are enough to make the top look farmhouse. Pick a faux plant: it never needs watering, so no water ends up sitting on the top. Keep the decor in a back corner so the front stays clear for folding.

The raised back and side edges stop a small pot or a tin from sliding off into the gap behind the machines.

Try this: put each piece on the counter for a week before you decide to keep it. If you keep moving it to fold, it is in the wrong spot.

I jazzed it up with some faux plants and it is so nice.”

Which wood-look finish suits a farmhouse or rustic room?

Choose by the wood already in the room, such as a cabinet, the floor or a door. Go by the swatch, not the name, because some names do not describe the look. Each swatch below links to that color on the product page.

Which finish goes with the wood in your room? (tones described from each swatch image on the product page)
Finish Suits a room with What the swatch shows
California Walnut Dark wood cabinets or trim with a warm brown cast, a wood door, stone or brick A medium-dark brown walnut grain
Battle Creek Oak White shiplap, white cabinets, pale or whitewashed wood A light cream woodgrain
Tenino Grey Dark wood or trim with a grayer, aged cast, and iron A dark olive-brown woodgrain
Iconic Maple Gray, weathered barnwood A gray and silver woodgrain (not a pale maple)
Glacier White Wood already in the shelves, cabinets or ceiling beams Plain white, so the wood around it stands out

Screens shift color, so check the swatch on the product page in daylight next to the wood you are matching before you order.

On white machines, a woodgrain top also breaks up all that white; our makeover guide shows it on a white pair.

Will a wood-look counter work on your machines?

Check the machines before the look. Only a pair of front-loaders sitting next to each other can take it.

Fits

  • Two front-loaders that sit next to each other, washer beside dryer, and the pair fits one of the three sizes (see the sizing guide)
  • Two brands or two heights, once the tops are level (how to level them is just below)
  • Shelves or cabinets above, with more than 3.5 inches of room plus space for your hands

Does not fit

  • A stacked pair, dryer on top of the washer
  • A washer that loads from the top, because the counter would block its lid
  • Machines with curved tops
  • A spot within reach of the sink's spray

Machines at two heights? Even them out with their own adjustable feet first. Still a little off? The product page's fix is a folded towel used as a shim: it lies on the lower machine's top, beneath the counter, and never goes under a machine's feet.

Top-loader or a stacked pair? The counter is out, but the farmhouse look is not. Put the wood on the wall instead, with an open wood shelf or a cabinet from another store: open the washer's lid all the way and hang the shelf above its top edge.

Worth knowing: this is a wood look, not wood. It cannot be stained, sanded or distressed, so the finish you choose is the one you keep. The top is water resistant, so a spill is fine if you wipe it up; just do not leave water sitting on it for a long time. The shelves, paneling, sink and decor in these ideas are separate buys; the counter itself goes together with seven screws and a Phillips screwdriver.

Check the size of your pair, then choose the wood

Our sizing guide matches front-load pairs to a counter size and shows the room the rail needs under shelves or cabinets.

Farmhouse laundry room questions, answered

Can you stain, sand or distress it for a rustic look?

No. The color is in the laminate itself, a hard surface fused on with heat, not in a coat of stain or paint, so it cannot be stained, sanded or distressed. Choose the finish that already looks the way you want; each swatch above opens that color on the product page.

Will the dryer's heat hurt a wood-look top?

It should not. The product page says the top is built to sit right on the machines, and that a running dryer's heat will not make it warp, discolor or lift.

Do you need a carpenter to put one in?

No. The product page says it goes together in a few minutes with a Phillips screwdriver and seven screws, ships flat in a box about 2 inches tall that fits through any doorway, and one person can handle the job. It then sits on rubber pads, which the page says keep it in place through spin cycles.

Is farmhouse style still popular for laundry rooms?

It still makes the list: at time of posting, Houzz's top 10 of its most-saved new laundry room photos includes a room it calls Relaxed Farmhouse, with a wood countertop.

Bring the wood look to your machine tops

It comes in Standard, Large and Extra Large, and in colors such as California Walnut, Battle Creek Oak, Iconic Maple and Glacier White. In the product page's words, it ships within 2 to 3 business days, arrives by parcel carrier a few days later, often sooner, and shipping is free in the continental United States.
