Garage Laundry Room Ideas: Check the Garage First, Then Make It Work

Four checks a garage needs before a washer and dryer move in, then six garage laundry room ideas, from where the car stops to where you fold, most of which work with any machines.

The short answer: A garage can hold your laundry if it passes four checks first: it never gets near freezing, it stays dry, a licensed electrician has checked the outlets and circuits, and the dryer vents outside. After that, the best garage laundry room ideas keep the car clear of the machines, keep detergent apart from car products and find a folding spot that is not the car's hood. For that last job, OfficeSimpli sells a counter for side-by-side front-loaders, not stacked machines or a top-loader.

Can a laundry room be in the garage? Four checks first

Most garage laundry room design advice starts with shelves and paint. Start with the garage itself: cold, damp, power and venting decide whether a washer and dryer belong there at all.

1. Winter cold

GE's support page says a washer should never be installed where it will face temperatures near freezing, and it names a garage as the example: the cold can freeze its water valves. If your garage gets that cold, heat it before the machines move in, or keep the laundry indoors.

2. Damp air and wet floors

A parked car drips rain and snow melt, and the machines add moisture of their own. The EPA's goal for a home is humidity under 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50. A humidity meter shows where your garage stands, and a dehumidifier can bring the number down. Keep standing water and flooding away from the machines.

3. Outlets and circuits

Each machine's installation instructions list its power needs; have a licensed electrician check the garage's outlets and circuits against them and your local code.

4. The dryer vent

The EPA says to vent clothes dryers outside where possible. The U.S. Fire Administration adds: have a professional install the dryer, check that the vent is not damaged, crushed or blocked, and make sure the outdoor flap opens while the dryer runs. Gas dryer? Check its manual and your local code for anything about garages.

This assumes water lines and a drain are already there; if not, see the conversion question.

Garage laundry room ideas for any washer and dryer

Once your garage passes, try these six ideas. Five fit any washer and dryer, stacked pairs and top-loaders included; idea 2 needs a side-by-side front-load pair. In a small garage, start with idea 1.

Mark where the car stops, short of the machines

Fixes: a bumper in the dryer, a blocked doorWorks with any machines

A garage laundry shares its floor with a car. Pull in too far and the bumper meets the dryer; park too close and the car door blocks the washer door. Decide where the car stops before the machines go in. A parking stop (a low block the front tire rolls against) or a tennis ball hung from the ceiling on a string marks the spot.

Try this: park as usual, open the washer door all the way and set a basket in front of it. If you have to squeeze past the car, move the stop back.

Fold on the machines instead of the hood of the car

Fixes: folding on the car or the dryerSide-by-side front-loaders only

With no table in the garage, laundry gets folded on the hood or the trunk, where road dust settles. If your washer and dryer are front-loaders side by side, our laundry counter for front-load pairs turns both tops into one surface. Nothing bolts it to the machines or the wall; it sits on a rubber pad at each corner. The product page puts it this way: "Even on a spin cycle that walks the washer across the floor, the countertop stays put." If your washer walks on a sloped garage floor, level it first (see the leveling question).

Raised edges on the back and sides keep socks from dropping behind the machines onto the garage floor, and the counter covers the machine tops, so dust settles on a surface you can wipe. To clean the back of the dryer, where the Fire Administration says lint builds up, lift the counter off, then set it back.

Try this: with a shelf or a cabinet over the machines, measure up from the machine tops first: the rail needs 3.5 inches, board included, plus room for your hands. Our sizing guide shows the check.

No top to fold on? Use the workbench or a wall table

Fixes: stacked pairs and top-loadersTakes little floor

A stacked pair has no top within reach, and a top-loader's lid must open, so nothing can stay on it. A garage with a workbench already has a folding spot. Give laundry one end of the bench, wiped down and covered with a clean sheet or a smooth board, so sawdust and oil stay off clean clothes. No bench? A table that folds down from the wall or a rolling cart takes little floor (our folding station guide weighs both), or carry the basket inside to fold.

Try this: if you hunch to fold at the bench, a wall table hung at your own height may suit you better.

Give detergent its own shelf, away from car and garden jugs

Fixes: grabbing the wrong jugShelves: a separate buy

Garages hold motor oil, windshield fluid and weed killer, often in jugs close to a detergent bottle's size. Keep laundry supplies on their own shelf or in their own cabinet beside the machines, with car and garden products on another wall, so nobody grabs the wrong jug. Over a top-load washer, open the lid all the way and hang any shelf above the open lid.

Try this: if you have to step around the car or the mower to reach the detergent, move the shelf.

Get clean clothes inside before the garage dust does

Fixes: grit on clean clothesWorks with any machines

Each time the garage door opens, dust and road grit can blow in. Fold and carry clean laundry inside the same day, in a lidded basket if the garage is dusty. A door mat at the steps up to the house keeps that grit from riding inside.

Try this: sweep in front of the machines before laundry day, so a dropped sock lands somewhere clean.

Make it look like a room: a light, a mat and a finished wall

Fixes: a corner that looks like storageLights and paint: separate buys

A garage laundry looks like part of the house once it has its own light, floor and wall. Hang a light right over the machines, lay a washable mat on the concrete where you stand, and paint or panel the wall behind the machines. On a front-load pair, a counter across the tops makes the machines read as one built-in piece, like base cabinets in a kitchen.

Try this: check the corner after dark. If you cannot tell navy socks from dark gray ones at the machines, it needs its own light.

Does your garage pair suit a counter on top?

Check both lists before you order. The counter fits only when both machines end at the same height, for example on pedestals made for them; otherwise skip the counter. Gas dryer on a platform? Check the dryer's manual and local code.

Fits

  • A side-by-side front-load pair, as in the render at the top
  • Machines that end at the same height, on their own feet or on pedestals made for them (drawer bases sold to raise front-loaders)
  • A garage that never gets near freezing and stays dry, with no standing water or flooding near the machines

Does not fit

  • Machines stacked one above the other
  • A top-load washer: its lid must open, so nothing can stay on it
  • Machines with curved or sloping tops
  • A garage that gets near freezing, floods or stays damp

Worth knowing: this is engineered wood under a laminate, a hard decorative layer bonded on with heat. The product page calls that top water-resistant against spills and damp clothes, so a spill is fine as long as you wipe it up; like any wood furniture, it does not do well with water left sitting on it for a long time. The page also says it handles a running dryer's heat, but it gives no temperature range, so it does not cover a garage's summer heat or winter cold. That is why the counter belongs only in a garage that never gets near freezing and stays dry. The garage work costs extra: insulation or heat, an electrician, vent work, a parking stop, shelves and a light.

Garage laundry room questions, answered

Can I convert my garage into a laundry room?

It can be done. A licensed plumber and electrician check the drain, the water supply and the dryer circuit and add what is missing, and the dryer may need a vent through the wall. Some of that work may need a permit, so ask your local building department first, then run the four checks above.

How do you level the machines on a sloped garage floor?

Level the machines first: most front-loaders have adjustable legs, as the product page notes, so turn them until both tops sit level and match. If a sliver of a gap remains, the product page suggests a folded towel: lay it on the lower machine's top, under the counter. Never put towels under the machines' feet.

Can one person get it into the garage and set it up?

Yes, by the product page's account: one person can handle the job, and the flat box, about 2 inches tall, fits through any doorway. It is heavy, so build it beside the machines: a Phillips screwdriver and seven screws. Then, in the product page's words, "set the assembled countertop onto the machines before attaching the rubber pads."

Is the counter okay in a cold garage over winter?

Not if the garage gets near freezing: GE says the washer should not be there either. Add the counter only to a garage that never gets near freezing and stays dry (see the fit list).

On putting it together

Took me about 10 minutes to assemble and can be a 1 person project (although having a 2nd person to hold the boards together is a plus).”

Fold on the machines, not the car

Pick from Standard, Large and Extra Large to match your pair's width and depth. Order once the garage passes all four checks; in the product page's words, it "ships within 2 to 3 business days, arrives by parcel carrier a few days later, often sooner."
