Hallway Laundry Closet Ideas: Doors, Venting and a Place to Fold

Seven ideas for a laundry closet off a hallway, from doors that let the dryer breathe to a high shelf, a light and a place to fold, whether your machines are stacked or side by side.

A render, not a photo: our Washer Dryer Countertop across a white front-load pair in a hallway closet, with the closet's own shelf above. Solid doors like these bifolds need vents added (idea 1).

The short answer: The best hallway laundry closet ideas start with air and access: doors that let the dryer breathe, room behind it for the vent, then a high shelf, a light and somewhere to fold. Many hallway closets hold a stacked pair, which leaves no machine top to fold on, so use a wall table or a rolling cart. For two front-loaders side by side, OfficeSimpli sells a counter that rests across both tops. It does not work on stacked machines, a top-load washer or curved tops (see the fit list).

Small laundry closet ideas, from the doors in

Tackle these in order. Ideas 1 to 5 suit any closet, 6 is for a stacked pair or a top-loader, and 7 is for two front-loaders side by side. Start with the doors and the vent.

Pick closet doors that let the dryer breathe

Fixes: heat trapped behind closed doorsCheck your dryer's manual

A running dryer gives off heat, and doors without vents hold it in. LG's DLEX4000 dryer manual asks for two vents in closet doors: an upper opening of at least 48 square inches, no lower than 6 feet above the floor, and a lower one of at least 24 square inches, no more than one foot above the floor. Grilles in the door, a door cut short at the top and bottom, or louvered doors (slanted slats) with the same open area all work, it says.

These numbers come from one LG dryer's manual, which covers its gas and electric versions. Other dryers set their own closet rules, so check your own manual.

Try this: find the closet section in your dryer's installation guide before you shop for doors.

Keep the dryer vent free behind the machines

Fixes: a squashed vent and hidden lintA pro installs the dryer

In a shallow closet it is tempting to push the machines back until the doors close, which is how a dryer vent gets squashed. The U.S. Fire Administration says to check the venting behind the dryer for damage, crushing or a blockage, to clean the lint filter before and after each cycle, and to have a professional install and service the dryer.

LG's DLEX4000 manual asks for at least 5 inches of space behind that dryer in a closet; your own manual gives your dryer's figure.

Try this: shine a flashlight behind the dryer and look for any stretch of vent that is flattened or folded.

Let the washer air out between loads

Fixes: a musty closetNo new parts needed

Closet doors keep the washer's moisture in. LG's help page for its front-load washers says that when the washer door stays closed, the moisture from washing cannot dry, and mold may form in the door gasket, the rubber seal around the opening. Leave the washer door and the detergent dispenser open between loads, as LG advises, and keep children from climbing into the open drum.

The dryer's air has to get out too: the U.S. Fire Administration says the vent cover on the outside wall should open whenever the dryer runs.

Try this: after the last load, wipe the door seal and the glass dry with a towel, then leave the door open until the drum is dry.

Put the shelf up high, and the ironing board on a side wall

Fixes: supplies piled on the machinesShelves and hooks: separate buys

A shelf above the machines holds towels, detergent and baskets. Its height is the part to check. LG's DLEX4000 manual asks for at least 18 inches between the top of that dryer and a shelf or cabinet above it in a closet, and it limits how deep that cabinet can be. Our counter needs only 3.5 inches under the shelf for its rail, the raised edge on its back and sides, plus room for your hands, so with that dryer the manual's number decides.

Hooks on a side wall keep an ironing board or a drying rack off the floor.

Try this: before you hang the shelf, mark where its underside will sit and check the drop to the dryer's top against the manual.

Light the inside of the closet, not just the hallway

Fixes: a dark closet off a dim hallwayWiring? Call an electrician

A hallway light shines on the closet doors, not inside. Once a shelf goes up, the back of the machine tops can sit in shadow, where stray socks hide. A light under the shelf fixes that: a battery light with a motion sensor needs no wiring, and a wired fixture is a job for an electrician.

Try this: drop a dark sock at the back of the machine tops; if you can't spot it, add a light.

Stacked pair or top-loader? Fold on the wall or on wheels

Good for: a stacked pair or a top-loaderNothing rests on the machines

Many hallway closets only fit a stacked pair, the dryer held above the washer by a stacking kit. That leaves no machine top at folding height, so the counter in idea 7 is out (see the fit list), and a top-load washer's lid rules it out too.

Fold beside the closet instead: on a table that folds down from the hallway wall, or on a slim cart with a flat top that parks beside the tower. Our folding station guide covers the drop-down wall table and the rolling cart.

Try this: measure how far the open doors reach into the hallway; a wall table or a parked cart has to sit clear of them.

Side-by-side front-loaders? Lay one counter across both tops

A customer's laundry alcove, open with no closet doors: our Washer Dryer Countertop runs almost wall to wall across a white LG front-load pair.

Fixes: nowhere to fold behind the doorsNo drilling or brackets

With two front-loaders side by side, the machine tops are the only flat surface in the closet. Our counter for side-by-side front-load pairs rests across both on rubber pads, with no bolts, brackets or wall mounting, and lifts off when you need the hoses. It does not change how the doors close: as our sizing guide explains, its front edge lands at or just behind the control panel, so doors that clear your machines now will clear the counter too.

Build it where it will sit. It ships flat in a box about 2 inches thick that goes through a doorway on its edge, and it goes together with seven screws and a Phillips screwdriver. The product page says one person can handle the job and lists a 44 to 55 pound build, so expect a heavy lift; one buyer quoted below built it on top of the machines. Then, as the product page advises, slide it into position before you attach the rubber pads.

Try this: push the machines to where they will stay, then close the doors and check that they clear the control panels.

From a buyer with a tight laundry closet

Did it help me solve a storage issue in a tight laundry closet? Yes. It was also a lot heavier than expected so it made installation much more difficult for me.”

How one buyer built it alone

Since I was doing this solo I used the products box as a cover to prevent damage to the top of the washer/dryer while I put it together. Once together I slid the box out from underneath without having to hoist the entire thing onto the top of the washer/dryer after it was put together.”

Which doors work best on a laundry closet?

Closet doors come in six common styles. Choose for the hallway first, by how much floor or wall each needs to open. Then meet your dryer manual's closet vent rule (LG's DLEX4000, for example, asks for vents near the top and bottom) with louvers, grilles or a door cut short.

Bifold doors

Each side folds in half, needing little floor, and the folded panels stay in the opening. The standard closet look; louvered ones add texture.

Sliding doors

Panels slide past each other, so nothing swings out, but only half the closet opens at a time. Plain panels look clean; mirrored ones double as a hall mirror.

A barn door

Slides along the hallway wall, so it needs empty wall beside the closet at least as wide as the door. It makes the closet a feature, rustic or modern.

A pocket door

Slides into the wall and keeps the hallway clear, but fitting one means opening the wall. Once open, the door disappears.

Hinged doors

Swing into the hallway, so the floor in front must stay clear; their backs can hold a slim rack. They can match the room doors, so the closet blends in.

A curtain

Hangs on a tension rod with no drilling and slides fully aside. It looks soft and casual, in a fabric that suits the hallway.

Renting? Swap in louvered bifolds and store the originals to put back when you move out, or leave the doors open while the dryer runs.

Will a counter fit in your hallway closet?

Three measurements settle it: the width between the closet's side walls at the height of the machine tops, the gap up to the shelf (idea 4), and the doorway with the doors fully open. Our sizing guide matches 16 front-load pairs to Standard, Large or Extra Large. If the doorway is narrower than the board, the product page does not cover it: check that the flat board tilts in on its edge before you order, then build it on the machines (idea 7).

Check the depth too. LG's WM4000HWA pair is 30 1/4 inches deep at its deeper machine, door shut, per our sizing guide. LG's DLEX4000 manual asks for at least 5 inches behind that dryer and shows 1 inch between its front and the closet door, so that pair needs 36 1/4 inches from the back wall to the inside of the closed closet doors. Measure yours the same way against your machines' depth and manuals; the counter adds nothing to that depth.

Fits

  • Two front-loaders standing side by side, with flat tops
  • A closet at least as wide as the counter (54 or 58 inches) and as wide as your pair plus the side space its manuals ask for
  • At least 3.5 inches under the closet shelf for the rail, plus hand room and whatever your dryer's manual asks
  • Machines of different heights, leveled with their own feet first; if one still sits low, the product page's folded towel goes on that machine's top, under the counter

Does not fit

  • A stacked pair, with the dryer above the washer
  • A top-load washer, since its lid opens upward into the counter
  • Machines whose tops are curved or slope away
  • Side walls closer together than the counter is wide

Worth knowing: our product page says the laminate top, a hard surface fused onto an engineered-wood core, handles a running dryer's heat without warping or lifting, but one verified buyer reported an edge opening up near dryer heat. We have no data on closed closets; if yours runs warm, keep that review in mind. Doors or grilles, a shelf and a light are separate buys.

Hallway laundry closet questions, answered

Can a washer and dryer go in a hallway closet?

Yes, if the dryer's manual allows it. LG's DLEX4000 manual, for example, covers closet installs: vents in the doors, space on every side, and no other fuel-burning appliance, such as a gas water heater, in the same closet. In a closet that never held laundry, the water and drain, the dryer's power (a 240-volt circuit for LG's electric version, or a gas line for its gas one), the vent run to an outside wall and a drain pan under the washer are a pro's call.

How wide does a closet need to be for a washer and dryer side by side?

Start from 54 inches: most front-loaders from LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Maytag and Electrolux are 27 inches wide. A GE pair measures 56 and, per our sizing guide, takes the 58-inch Extra Large. Add the side space each machine's manual asks for; LG's DLEX4000 manual asks for at least 1 inch on each side of that dryer. Too narrow? See idea 6.

Do pedestals change anything in a closet?

Not the counter size: pedestals, the platforms that raise front-loaders, change the height only. They do bring the machine tops closer to the closet shelf, so measure that gap again.

Two front-loaders behind the closet doors?

Pick Standard, Large or Extra Large for a side-by-side front-load pair, and choose the color on the product page. Shipping is free in the continental United States. If you are planning the closet work around a delivery, the product page words it exactly like this: "It ships within 2 to 3 business days, arrives by parcel carrier a few days later, often sooner."
