Modern Laundry Room Design: 5 Ideas for Clean Lines and Hidden Clutter
Five ways to give a laundry room clean lines, flat finishes and clutter out of sight, what changes in a small room, and what Houzz's 2026 list of the most-saved laundry rooms adds to the look.
The short answer: Modern laundry room design comes down to three things: straight, clean lines, flat finishes with little or no pattern, and clutter kept behind doors. Over side-by-side front-loaders, one plain top across both machines swaps two busy lids for a single surface. OfficeSimpli sells one, and for a modern room we would pick its flat charcoal, plain white or gray woodgrain finish. A counter can't rest on a top-load washer, whose lid opens upward, or on a stacked pair. By our count of Houzz's room descriptions, nine of its ten most-saved new laundry rooms have color, pattern or wood.
What is modern laundry room design?
Modern means fewer, plainer things, not new machines or a bigger room. Three habits do most of the work.
Clean lines
Straight edges: cabinets in one run, the machines lined up, one long surface over them.
Flat finishes
Plain colors with little or no pattern, one finish repeated instead of five.
Clutter out of sight
Bottles and boxes behind doors or in one bin, so surfaces stay empty.

Which of our finishes look modern?
Our product page says its white and gray tones read modern. Here are our three picks, described by what you see, since the names alone can mislead: Iconic Maple is a gray woodgrain, not a blonde wood. A tap on any of them opens it on the product page.
From a buyer who picked white over matching dark cabinets
glad I went with the white instead of trying to get something to match my expresso cabinets!”
Small modern laundry room ideas
A small laundry room has less wall and less floor to spare, so everything you add should hide something or do a job.
Two or three finishes, no more
One cabinet color, one counter finish and one metal for pulls and rod. Fewer finishes look calmer.
Closed storage, up the wall
Cabinets over the machines hide what they hold in space that otherwise sits empty. Our small laundry room storage guide covers them and the gap beside the machines.
A top that stops at the machines
Ours rests on the machine tops, and its front edge lands at or just behind the control panel, as our sizing guide explains.
On sizes: the Standard is 54 inches wide and 27.5 deep. The Large and Extra Large are both 58 inches wide and differ only in depth, 27.5 inches against 30. Each needs a side-by-side front-load pair about as wide as the Standard or wider; our sizing guide says two compacts sold as 24 inch make a 47-inch pair, not a clean fit for a ready-made board. Laundry closets and long, narrow rooms, where compact or stacked pairs are common, each have their own guide.
Will the counter look built in?
Our product page calls it a furniture-grade top that looks built in, and from the front you see one flat board across both machines. It is not an edge-free slab like stone, though. A low rail runs along the back and both sides, 3.5 inches above the machine tops with the board included, so socks and small bottles stop at the edge instead of sliding behind the machines. The front stays open for folding.
The board is engineered wood under a heat-fused laminate surface and a clear protective coat. The product page says its rubber pads hold it still even when a spin cycle walks the washer across the floor, and that dryer heat will not warp it; wipe spills up rather than letting water sit. It goes together with seven screws and lifts off in seconds when you need the hoses behind the machines.
Not confirmed: machines hidden behind cabinet doors. Doors over the machines are a cabinet job, so check the machine's manual for the airflow it needs; our counter is for exposed side-by-side tops, and its fit behind panels is not confirmed.
Worth knowing: a counter finishes only the top of the machines; the fronts stay in view and the rail shows. Cabinets, lights, a rod and bins are separate buys.

What are the trends for laundry rooms in 2026?
Houzz, the home design site, counted down the ten most-saved new laundry room photos uploaded to it around the start of 2026 (exact dates in Sources). In its words, these rooms "combine smart storage, durable materials and efficient planning with color, pattern and personality." We counted what Houzz's description of each room names. Drying space leads.
What that means for a modern room: the rooms people saved most are warmer than an all-white box. So keep the cabinets flat and the counter plain, and let one thing carry the color, pattern or wood: a painted run of cabinets, one wall of patterned tile, a real wood floor or, on the counter, a gray woodgrain look such as Iconic Maple. Ten rooms from one site is a snapshot of what people saved, not a survey.
Two of the ten rooms stack the washer and dryer, and one is built around a top-load washer; for those setups, see the fit list.
Modern laundry room questions, answered
What are the current trends in laundry room design?
More color, pattern and wood around hard-working storage; the 2026 trends section has the full tally.
Can a modern laundry room have wood in it?
Yes: keep the wood to one surface, such as a wood floor, and the lines straight. Three of the ten rooms on Houzz's 2026 most-saved list mention wood. Our Iconic Maple is a gray woodgrain laminate, with the look of wood but not real wood.
Do you need new machines for a modern laundry room?
No. The look comes from what surrounds the machines: flat doors, one plain surface and nothing left out.
