Which transaction counter type do you need?

The counter is what makes a reception desk a reception desk. The three builds you will meet most on an L: a stack-on counter, a raised ledge above the work surface like the one built into our compact L-shape; a glass ledge, a 3/8-inch glass top floating on metal stand-offs, the signature Overture look; and a full shroud counter that wraps the visitor-facing front in tall panels, the most privacy and the most formal presence. A hang-on counter and a plain laminate ledge on a panel shell make five, and both appear in the measured table below. Across our line, counters run 41 to 42 inches, standing-transaction height. How much lockable storage do you need?

Reception desks hold things a regular desk does not: petty cash, patient forms, packages, keys. Entry-level desks give you a lockable drawer. The Overture flagships use dual locking pedestals: a box-box-file (two supply drawers over one file drawer) under the front desk, a file-file for hanging folders under the return. If documents should not be reachable by whoever walks in, dual locking pedestals are the spec to look for.

Left or right return, and how do you measure before you order?

An L-shaped desk has a main run and a return that can attach on either side. The counter should face the visitor's approach; the return sits toward the wall. Our compact L-shape is ordered with a left or right return, so decide before checkout. Then measure. We plan 42 to 48 inches of clear floor behind the desk for the chair, the same 42 inches at the open end of the L so the chair can roll out, and a 36 inch walkway on the visitor side, the figure the ADA uses for the minimum clear width of an accessible route. On the 78.5 by 40.5 inch desk that adds up to 78.5 plus 42 inches across, and 40.5 plus 42 plus 36 inches front to back: about 10.5 feet wide by 10 feet deep at minimum, 11 by 10.5 feet with the comfortable 48 inch chair zone. The 94 by 90 inch Overture L wants about 11.5 feet wide by 14 feet deep by the same sums. Tape the footprint on the floor before you order.

How do you keep the screen and the paperwork private?

Whatever is on the receptionist's monitor should not be visible to the person checking in. A 41 or 42 inch counter puts a wall between visitor sightlines and the desk-height work surface behind it; shroud fronts extend that privacy across the whole face. If the desk handles medical, legal, or financial paperwork, treat screen privacy as a requirement.

Where does the power go?

A reception station runs a monitor, a phone, a printer, and increasingly a card reader. How does TFL hold up under daily public contact?

A reception counter gets touched by the public all day: keys dropped on it, cards slid across it, elbows leaned on it. Our work surfaces are engineered wood with a thermally fused laminate (TFL) surface, the commercial standard that outlasts veneer and paint under exactly this kind of contact; on a few Overture desks the counter faces are high-pressure laminate (HPL), the heavier commercial grade, and the table below says which. That is the right benchmark for furniture that faces strangers rather than one careful owner.

Does an L-shaped reception desk need an accessible counter section?

If the desk serves the public, plan for one. The 2010 ADA Standards (section 904.4) call for a section of counter no more than 36 inches high and at least 36 inches long, or 30 inches long with knee space under it for a forward approach; California's code holds the section to 34 inches high and 36 inches long either way. Every transaction counter in this guide sits at 41 to 42 inches (the exact figures are in the measured table), so the accessible section is a separate lowered surface. Worth knowing: a height-adjustable desk that lowers its own work surface serves the staff side, not the visitor side. Lowering the receptionist's desk does not create an accessible counter for the person checking in.

There is no room for a second station, no file-file pedestal for hanging folders, no accessible counter section listed, and none of the Overture options like glass counters or height adjustment. If your front desk processes heavy paperwork or serves the public, start one tier up.

Best Overture entry: a straight desk that expands to an L

At 60 inches wide this is the smallest footprint in the guide, the right call for a genuinely tight lobby. It is also designed to grow: add the matching return and hutch later and it becomes a full L-shaped station without replacing what you already bought.

Honest flaws: only one of the three pedestal drawers locks; if you need dual locking pedestals on day one, look at the L-shape with storage instead. The finish is white only. And until you add the return, one 60 by 30 inch surface is tight for a monitor, a printer, and paperwork at once.

Best step-up to U-shape for busy lobbies

When one receptionist handles a constant stream of visitors, the limiting factor stops being counter space and becomes working surface behind it. A U-shape wraps the desk, counter, and rear credenza around a single position, so the phone, the packages, and the paperwork each get a zone. The sit-stand surface and built-in power module make this the desk for the person behind it eight hours a day.

Honest flaws: it is deeper than it is wide, 109 inches front to back, which rules out shallow lobbies. And when the sit-stand surface is raised for standing work, the monitor rides up with it, so screen privacy is a seated-mode feature.

Best for sit-stand staff and flexibility

Best full-featured L-shape

The desk we mean when we say a reception desk should function like front-of-house cabinetry. The shroud counter wraps the corner at 42 inches, so visitors see a finished front from every angle while everything behind it stays locked: supplies in one pedestal, folders in the other. If the front desk is the first thing a client sees at a law firm, a medical practice, or a hotel, measure against this one.

Honest flaws: the price and the footprint. At 94 by 90 inches it needs a genuinely large lobby, and it is the most expensive L in this guide. It is also made to order, not the answer when you need a desk in the lobby next week.
